I wrote these lyrics during the first weekend of the uprisings in Minneapolis (where I live) following the murder of George Floyd. At that time, I felt dismay, grief, and hopelessness and decided to put pen to paper. In the process, I remembered that I wasn’t a helpless bystander in perpetuating white supremacy. With that remembering came a renewed sense of purpose. As a white person, it is my duty to call out racism when I see it, uplift marginalized voices, prioritize listening to BIPOC individuals, and continually challenge myself to critically examine the ways that I benefit from the sickness of white supremacy. It is also my job to continually check my fragility and not check-out of this fight. I implore all of my fellow white people to do the same.

This is a song of hope as much as it is a song of dismay. Never stop fighting.
